To build up that anticipation I’ll tell you the other top tweets of the year first before we reveal the wild card. If you’re an active Twitter user you know that there’s a difference between the most liked tweet and the most retweeted tweet, but nonetheless the following were mutually appreciated by the masses.
The most liked tweet of 2017 was by our former POTUS, Barack Obama in August. Following the racist violence in Charlottesville, Obama tweeted a photo smiling at four babies all of different ethnic backgrounds while reiterating the words of Nelson Mandela saying QUOTE – “No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin or his background or his religion…” The tweet was like more than 4.6 million times.
In second place for the most liked tweet was Ariana Grande back in May following the heartbreaking Manchester bombing that took place at her concert. She tweeted – “broken.
from the bottom of my heart, i am so so sorry. i don’t have words.” The third was also by Obama when he showed support for John McCain saying QUOTE –“ John McCain is an American hero & one of the bravest fighters I’ve ever known. Cancer doesn’t know what it’s up against. Give it hell, John.”
As for retweets, the list is similar but also includes Obama’s farewell tweets at the end of his term saying – “Thank you for everything. My last ask is the same as my first. I’m asking you to believe—not in my ability to create change, but in yours.” Linkin Park’s twitter photo of Chester Bennington after his passing was the sixth most retweeted tweet of the year following Lebron James response to Steph Curry not wanting to visit the White House following the finals because of Trump. Lebron tweeted QUOTE – “@StephenCurry30 already said he ain’t going! So therefore ain’t no invite. Going to White House was a great honor until you showed up!”
As for the top tweet of the year, are you ready? It was about a chicken nugget…because well, America. A man named Carter Wilkerson tweeted @Wendys asking – “how many retweets for a year of free chicken nuggets?” To which Wendys responded saying – 18 million. I don’t think it happened, but the tweet did become the most popular of the year so that’s somethin.
Twitter’s yearly round up data also revealed the most tweeted about celebrities globally which included BTS, Seventeen, Camila Cabello, Justin Bieber, and Maine Mendoza. As for which fan armies dominated with hashtags and love for their favorite artists, Lovatics led the pack followed by Little Monsters, Harmonizers, Beliebers, and the 5SOSfam.
And if you’re wondering where Trump is in all of this. Well while he is very vocal on Twitter and was the year’s most tweeted about world leader, his tweets weren’t all that popular.
You don’t say. In fact none of them were among the years most liked or most retweeted. As for why, well I’ll let you put two and two together on that one. Perhaps the year’s top hashtags will help you figure out why. The top ten hashtags of the year were Resist, Make America Great Again, Impeach Trump, Trump Train, Womens March, Not My President, Black Lives Matter, No DAPL, Take a Knee, and Boycott NFL. I think the message is pretty clear.
